I am looking for the title of a book...

Unread post

Hi I am looking for the title of a book - it follows a 'last man on earth' theme, literally.

From what I remember - i read it in my childhood.

A Scientist/Military Researcher? awakes in a bunker. He was part of a team trying to find the cure to a plague/problem/war?

He was in suspended animation, rotating through with other members of the team.

It turns out he is the only one left. Apart from highly programmed autonomous robots, of which he has an attendant called I think - 'Nurse'

The story progresses through his emotional states, Shock, Grief, Loss,Megalomoania atc. , and his attempts to come to terms with his situation.

The story revolves around his attempts to reconcile his situation by hopping in and out of hibernation to let the time pass as his various plans come to fruition..

He essentially directs the robots to 'learn', and between hibernations, does various things like:
Directing them to explore all of Earth.
Goes through a phase where he directs them to assemble large mechanical armys and fight against each other
directs them to explore the galaxy
directs them to bring life back to the ruined world

the story ends with him awakening on a planet just like earth, getting spray painted green.

The planet was created by the, now sentient, robots and they kept him in hibernation until they had evolved - and been guided by the sentient robots - now beings of pure energy - to a civilization state very similar to that of earth when he first went into hibernation.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Thank You

I'd love to read that book, it sounds great.

What year did you read it in? That would narrow down some authors. Is there anything specific you can remember that could potentially be punched into google?

Hi Kalyptos.
I did a bit of looking around for you. It sounds like you're looking for a post-apocalyptic book. I found a page on wikipedia that has a whole list of post-apocalyptic books. I looked through some of them and i know that's it's not any of the following, so you will have less to go through:
Z for Zachariah
The Year of Rice and Salt
The Year of of the Quiet Sun
Eyes of the Calculor
Evolution
Empty World
Earth Abides
Nicolae
The Stand
The Book of Dave
Riddley Walker
Savage

Here's the Page:

I hope it helps you find what you are looking for. I'll let you know if i find it. Good luck. Maggie

Sounds like it could possibly be an Isaac Asimov story, but I can't find anywhere to go through each short story to rule any out. Asimov wrote a lot about robots, so this could definitely be something he would have written.

When I first read this thread awhile back I thought it was an Isaac Asimov as well. I had already read a good deal of his works so I just went through a list of ones I had yet to read and no luck. If you are still around Kalyptos, can you recall roughly the number of pages the book had? I would really like to read it :explode: :explode: :explode
