In general, pretty much any movie with puppets or clowns freaked me out as a kid.

You all of such children. Hostel and Saw are not scarey, they are shocking.
I remember seeing a movie called Blood Rust when I was a kid and it freaked me out. I must have only been six of seven at the time but I remember it to this day. That was back in the time when you only saw a movie once and it was gone unless it made it to tv or re-release. I know, my kids don't believe me about that either.

BTW, the movie is also called: Space Master X-7 (1958) More at IMDbPro »

BBTW, I don't remember the S&M part, but at six, I probably wouldn't have known what was going on anyway.

First of all, I assume you meant are such children.

Second, this sentiment is unnecessary and innapropriate. No one else here has laughed at or looked down upon what does or does not scare people, and it is incredibly rude for you to assume that you can just because you are older. Everyone is scared of something different, so just because it didn't scare you and you only consider it to be "shocking," doesn't mean that it doesn't legitimately scare someone else who would not be too keen on being called a "child" because of a fear of something he or she cannot help.

I might also remind you that the title of this thread is "what movie scared you when you were a kid," so their honest responses don't necessarily reflect how they feel now, and even if they do, who the hell are you to judge what makes something scary enough to scare adults without them being considered "children?"

(Pardon the harsh language, but I feel your insulting tone deserves the same in response.)

I did mean, "all such children" and ease up a bit. Stop being so sensitive, it was intended to be humorous, emphasizing how much things have changed since I was a kid.

Yes, "Saw" is mostly after the "shock effect." It's not really a movie that'll make your paranoid for the rest of the night. The term, I believe, is "torture porn." I'm not a big fan of that term, but I do love the Saw movies. The last one actually made a sort-of statement about insurance companies.

That doesn't excuse your tone, and none of the movies from "your time" are scary to me, so if you were scared of them, I could call you a baby.

Whether you realize it or not, you have a very condescending way of responding to people. Just something to think about.

I agree with this. I hadn't heard the term "torture porn" before, but I have heard that horror movies and pornography are both "body genres," meaning they have an effect on the body.

I saw the first "Saw" movie when it came out in theaters when I was a freshman in college. I was also taking an intro film course, so I got to see "The Shining" (for the first time, sad, I know) on the "big screen" in a lecture hall. Watching the two around the same time really drove home how things have changed, big time. Saw was escapist and didn't really scare me, but when I pressed the elevator call button to get back to my dorm room, in the back of my mind I imagined that it might just start pouring out blood.

The scene with the walls and rooms flowing with blood is one of my favorites from The Shining. it shows Kubrick's wonderful cinematography and the beauty he finds in the absurdity of horror. Coincidentally, Stephen King hated Stanley Kubrick's treatment of The Shining, and in the early 2000s, I believe it was, a made for TV movie of The Shining was made that fit more with how King actually wanted to see the story done.

My boyfriend likes to joke that The Shining (the Kubrick movie) is his favorite comedy. I never did find it to be scary, but that along with my boyfriend's idea of it may just show how twisted we've become over the course of our lives in regards to what we find scary. Most horror movies we watch are a laugh, or, in the case of most Romero films, sociological commentary. What I find most interesting in horror movies are people's reactions, especially in apocalyptic horror movies. They say more about the current human society and how they react to crisis than they do about the scary thing the movie is driven by.

What does scare me are true stories that show how horrible humans can really be, such as anything dealing with the Holocaust (which holds personal meaning and fear for me, as it is one of my biggest fears, being a Jewish girl who has felt the sting of religious persecution firsthand). Zombies might give me a thrill and scare me for a short while, but a Holocaust film can send me into panic attacks for days. The truth of life's atrocities are far scarier to me than any monster concocted for a horror film.

Speaking of horror films, The Fourth Kind sucked.

But if you're afraid of aliens, it might be a fun scare for ya. :-P
